Chapter 19: Catching Up

Jack pushed the swinging cabin door open and slipped inside. At once, nine heads turned in his direction, surprise mingling with curiosity on their faces as he entered. Jack had heard their voices during his jog up the hill; they’d been in the middle of a spirited conversation. Now, all chatter ended, and they stared mutely at him.

“Umm…hey, everyone.”

“Jack!” Billy, Sergio, and Kordell exclaimed together.

Jack waved at his friends. He felt odd, standing there in front of the flimsy cabin door while the rest of his bunkmates looked at him as if he were an extraterrestrial being. Billy, who had been playing chess with another boy, held a chess piece an inch above the board, as if he’d been a moment from making a move when Jack entered. Sergio and Kordell were the first to unfreeze; they jumped to their feet and raced over. They grabbed Jack’s shoulders and shook him.

“You’re all right!” Kordell shouted. “Yo, you don’t even look hurt at all.”

“Hurt?” Jack asked.

“Yeah,” Sergio said. “We, ehh, we hear what happen to you.”

Jack tensed. With all the thoughts running through his mind, he’d forgotten to think of how to respond when they inevitably asked about what happened to him. “You did?”

“Yeah,” Billy said, his bare feet causing the floorboards to creak as he hurried to join Sergio and Kordell. “We’re so sorry we weren’t there for you. We should’ve had your back.”

Jack bit his lower lip to prevent himself from speaking before he had time to think about what to say. A great deal of problems throughout his life had been the result of blurting out whatever was on his mind before he’d fully thought them over.

Do they know about my fight with Cyrus?

The sight of Butch and Reggie hopping off their cots caught Jack’s eyes. The rest of the trainees stood out of their way as the two boys approached. Jack felt a wave of alarm shoot across his chest. What did they want? Were those two idiots looking for trouble again? It would really suck if, not five minutes after returning, Jack would already be involved in another fight.

Reggie tapped Sergio on the shoulder and, after a brief, knowing look, Sergio nodded then stepped aside, allowing Butch and Reggie to stand in front of Jack.

“Bro,” Reggie said. “I know we got off to the wrong start, but like, I just wanna say that you got my respect, bro. It’s messed up what happened to you, and I know you and me and Butch had our beef, but it ain’t cool what went down. And we got your back from now on, okay bro? If he ever messed with you again, then Butch and me—hell, all of us here gotch’a back.”

He?

“Agreed,” Butch grunted. Jack thought his arm would fall off as Butch gave him a heavy-handed pat on the shoulder. “You know something, Harris? You’re all right.”
